Many tend to believe that obtaining a certification in the English language will serve the purpose in any domain in the future. While this may be partly true, it is not always so. For example, in order to study at European and American universities a simple certification is not invariably sufficient.
After choosing which schools he is aspiring to study at, he should review the English language requirements of each university – and possibly school.
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the certificates that is requested from students whose mother tongue is not English and who seek to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level in an English-speaking country or take an English course anywhere in the world.
The TOEFL iBT (Test Of English as a Foreign Language- Internet Based testing) is another test requested by international universities and colleges to estimate the proficiency of prospective students in the use of English. And similarly to the IELTS, the TOEFL is expected from students whose native language is not English and who are to take an undergraduate or postgraduate course in schools of English-speaking countries and universities where English is the language of instruction.

The IELTS is recognized by ASEP.
The TOEFL iBT is not recognized by ASEP.
The exams are conducted in the following modes:
IELTS: on paper or on computer (Computer-based)
TOEFL iBT: on a computer
The IELTS has a 1- 9 band score. The scores awarded in each part are calculated into a mean result. Indicatively, in terms of the CEFR, a 4 mark corresponds to a A2+/Β1 level, a 4.5-5 to a B1, a 5.5-6.5 to a B2, a 7-8 to a C1 and a 9 to a C2.
The TOEFL iBT has a 0 to 120 scale. Each section has a score range 0-30. There is no successful (pass) or unsuccessful (fail) grading in the test. Each higher education institution or their representatives set their own score requirements. It is reminded that the TOEFL is not recognised by ASEP. However, it is valid in other European countries. The correlation with the CEFR is as follows:
0-29 A1, 30-40 A2/A2+/B1-, 41-52 Β1, 53-64 B1+/B2, 65-78 B2, 79-95 C1, 96-120 C2.
Test results are valid for 2 years.
No, the IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT can be used for admission to universities, student and work visas and immigration visas.
Entry requirements differ between countries, universities and schools. You can visit the website of the individual institution and check. For example, if you have obtained your certification in a period of time longer than two years, it is highly probable you will be asked to submit a new, more recent certificate. In addition, there are schools and universities whose condition in terms of language proficiency is a C1 level and so, a C2 certificate can serve you just as well.
Lastly, the two tests examine a person’s competence in the English language, if the level of knowledge is adequate for their interaction with the professor and the rest of the students in an amphitheatre, or with other colleagues in the workplace. For this reason, there are no grammar or vocabulary exercises but activities which evaluate techniques such as reasoning, information spotting, speaker’s opinion identification, idea development etc.
